Whether
cycling for recreational, health or competitive reasons, a
proper discipline specific body position is paramount for efficiency
comfort, performance and reduced potential for injury.
This is achieved through bike-fitting, by the manipulation
of the three points of contact (saddle, handlebars and foot
to pedal interface). Modern cycles are designed to be discipline
specific, I.e Mountain bike, Road Bike, Triathlon Bike, in
order to efficiently deal with different uses and cycling
demands. It follows that cyclists should adopt discipline
specific body position to meet such demands if they are to
achieve optimal outcome.
An important factor which is often over looked in bike-fitting
is adjusting for musculoskeletal and biomechanical deficits,
i.e reduced spinal flexibility, poor core/pelvic/gluteal
function, hip joint restriction, tight hip flexors, tight
hamstrings, leg length difference, leg alignment, foot alignment,
ankle mobility
As therapists we are trained and qualified (with many years
experience) to identify these deficits, and to suggest potential
treatments/rehabilitation to offset these to improve your
cycling efficiency, comfort, performance and reduced potential
for injury.

The bike-fitting service at Heavitree Road
Chiropractic Centre is a 3 stage process
1: Pre bike-fit musculoskeletal screen
2: Treatment suggestions/ Rehabilitation suggestions- depending
upon findings in 1
3: Discipline specific Bike-fit.
The 3rd stage involves assessment of rider on bike at current
bike set up-via a combination of both static and dynamic (using
computer software) measurements and then adjusting bike and if
necessary cleats on the shoes according to the parameters for
adjustments found from the musculoskeletal screen, (if findings
dictate that shoe cleat wedges or orthotic insoles are indicated
to improve mechanics of the foot-pedal interface these will be
recommended - there is an additional cost for these - although
there is no obligation to pursue this, we are just interested
in creating for you the most efficient and comfortable position
on the bike for you). Once these adjustments have been made,
the rider on bike is then assessed again via a combination of
static and dynamic measurements with further tweaks to the bike
being made if required. A full report is then produced which
is emailed to you within 1-3 days.
Research suggests that taking this fully integrated approach
rather than just focusing on the bike alone creates the best
marriage between the adaptable body and the adjustable machine
(cycle).
